How Gospel Tracts Affect Lives in India

Imagine that you were born in a remote place in India and that you have never heard the name of Jesus. You long for peace and forgiveness of sin, but years go by and the emptiness in your heart only increases. Finally, you can’t bear it any longer and you walk away from your family, your possessions and your village to devote the rest of your life to the worship of a multitude of gods. You own nothing except for the saffron robe you wear and the stick in your hand. You wander from temple to temple in an endless search for ultimate answers.

Years come and go but you hardly notice. People respect you as a holy man and seek your wisdom. But you alone know that in spite of all the rituals you observe, the offerings you bring and the prayers you recite, your soul is engulfed in a a blacker darkness than when you started your journey. One day you are sitting in a temple courtyard with two other holy men when a young man walks up and gives you and your friends little leaflets. You start to read and your heart begins to pound. Could it be true that a God named Jesus can forgive sin? Could the message on this piece of paper hold the answer to the longing of your heart?

You call the young man over and ask him a multitude of questions about this new God and what it means to follow Him. He patiently and politely answers each question. As he shares about the love of God and salvation through Jesus, your heart deeply yearns to know Him. Finally when the young man courageously asks if you want to receive Jesus, you and your friends decide to call upon His name for salvation. As you do, you experience how Jesus cleanses you from all sins and delivers you from darkness. Immediately your heart overflows with joy and peace and you know that from this moment on, you will live for Jesus alone.

This is not a make believe story. It happened in a western Indian state. The man who led these “holy men” to the Lord was a Bible student in the Bible school of one of our ministry partners. What a victory for the cross! And it all began with a few little Gospel tracts. Millions of men, women and children across India have never heard the Gospel story. In fact, they don’t even know the name of Jesus and have never seen a Bible. Just like these former holy men, their lives are filled with heavy burdens, darkness and unforgiven sin.

A simple Gospel tract in their native language can change their eternal destiny. And people in India receive these tracts eagerly, then pass them along to family members and friends to read. Many times, as they travel from one person to another, these tracts end up in remote villages where the Gospel has never been preached. Along the way people open their hearts to Jesus and receive the gift of eternal life.

Right now, our ministry partners need to print at least two million Gospel tracts in various languages to sufficiently supply their native missionaries and churches for outreach work. Amazingly, they can produce each tract for about a penny so the cost for that massive amount of tracts is only $20,000. Through the distribution of these tracts thousands of men, women and children will have the opportunity to make Jesus the Lord of their lives through these materials. Amani: Reaching the Muslim Woman

There is arguably no group of people on the planet more oppressed than Muslim women in Islamic societies. Born into a political/social/religious culture that compares women to donkeys and dogs, they are discriminated against from birth, forced to live behind a curtain of black, given permission by the Qur’an to be beaten by their husbands and told that they are the predominant inhabitants of hell. Who will introduce them to a loving God who made them in his image?

Into this picture steps Amani. Born into a Muslim family, Amani was raised by her grandmother. She was taught to be a free thinker in all areas except her Islamic faith. Shockingly, her mother became a believer in Christ when Amani was 13. This started Amani on her own quest for faith where as a young teen she gave her heart to Christ. After her mother was forced to leave the country, Amani’s faith suffered.

Unable to leave with her, without fellowship, and afraid of an arranged marriage to a strict adherent of Islam, she married a man seemingly less committed to Islam. At first he allowed her to practice her own faith in secret, but then, after the birth of two children, she was forced to wear the head covering and instruct her children from the Qur’an. She was sickened by the spiritual poison she was forced to feed them.

Then one day—miraculously—she was permitted to visit the United States with her children. Once here she rededicated her life to Christ and began to study the Bible like never before. When her husband heard about it, he demanded her return. She was forced into hiding for ten years. Her husband sent people to bring her back and threatened to kill her. She had been married for nine years and experienced first hand the degradation that Muslim women endure. She suffered abuse and was treated as a mere object. She knew that women in the grip of Islam suffer a life of great pain and hopelessness. Eventually the Lord opened the door for her to begin ministering to Muslim women. Through Christian TV broadcasters she had met as a teen ager she was invited to share her experience on a TV show reaching out to Muslims. These people had a listening audience numbering in the millions.
Eventually, Amani hosted several episodes of the program. Then in September 2009, along with three other Christian women from a Muslim background, they launched The Muslim Women’s program on the same channel. Instantly, they had a built-in audience of millions. This program includes a call-in opportunity where women from around the world can voice their opinions, share their struggles and ask questions—opportunities they have never had before. Many have come to Christ and are receiving follow-up through the Internet, phone calls and even personal visits. Many men are also watching the program and calling in with questions.

Last year Amani’s show aired twice a month. There is a huge demand to make it a weekly show. But this is expensive. Each show costs approximately $8000 to produce. That is a lot but when you consider that it is seen by millions of viewers throughout the Middle East who have no other access to the truth, the show is extremely cost effective. Thousands upon thousands respond by phone, by email and through an online website linked to the show. Manara Ministries

Over 100,000 Egyptian Christians have fled Egypt since the so-called Arab Spring revolutions broke out this year. Churches have been burned and believers have been attacked and killed. Persecuted throughout the Middle East, Christians are leaving places like Egypt, Iraq, and Palestine in droves, often ending up in refugee camps in Jordan. Manara Ministries is actively involved in helping such people. Right now a 20 foot long container full of rice, pasta, canned food and clothing worth over $60,000 is ready for shipment to Aqaba, Jordan, in time for Christmas. These are believers pushed out of their homeland due to their faith in Christ. $6000 is needed to cover the shipping costs. In Bangladesh and Pakistan, countries where believers are often targets of terrible oppression, native missionaries are carrying out successful evangelical campaigns. 156 new believers recently came to Christ in such meetings and were baptized, shown right. These new believers long for their own Bible and songbook so they can know the Lord more deeply.

Christians Flee Baghdad as Gunmen Impose Sharia Law

This report was recently sent to our office by our Middle East Partners. Though the news is sobering, it gives us a glimpse into what Christians in the area are facing and what nearby believers are doing to help them.

The first-hand stories we hear continue to break our hearts. Every single Iraqi family has experienced one or more areas of persecution, murder, kidnapping, fleeing, disease, or grief, and in many cases, because of their faith. We have been involved in aiding Christian Iraqis for years, both in and outside of Iraq, but now because of the security situation in Iraq and the increased numbers of refugees, 18 months ago, the efforts shifted to assist refugees in Syria and Jordan. On a monthly basis hundreds of families in Aleppo, Damascus, and Amman are assisted with food parcels and basic medical care.

We have also started the printing of 50,000 Arabic Bibles to be provided to Iraqis in Syria. With winter approaching, and with the increased number of refugees who live under extremely difficult conditions, the situation is now alarming. Your contribution is very much needed at this time. Please talk to your church, organization, family and friends about supporting the work among Iraqi Christians. Some of the projects needing help are described below.

Christians Flee Baghdad as Gunmen Impose Sharia Law

More than 300 families have fled from the Dora District in Baghdad following the imposition of Sharia law by Islamic militants in August. The gunmen are especially targeting Christian families who are forced to convert to Islam or pay huge taxes. Men have to wear long beards and women veils, and the latter are not allowed to leave their homes without their husbands. Girls are forbidden from going to school. Relief organizations have been banned from delivering aid inside the district, leaving hundreds of people without assistance.

One Christian said his son had been kidnapped for ransom and the family was selling their home to raise the money to free him. He reported that the gunmen killed everyone in the house next door because the inhabitants refused to pay the taxes and didn’t want to convert to Islam. Government officials have been contacted about the attacks. The local police force was simply too small to take control of security in the area.

Camp Gilead

This year hundreds of children and young people gave their lives to Christ and many of them are now attending youth meetings all over Jordan. The extensive preparations, thorough leadership training and most of all the consistent prayer before and during camps made a tremendous impact! Mainly through a ministry team from Michigan, there was continuous prayer coverage during the programs. This team that was originally intended to help with various projects around the camp gracefully spent endless hours in prayer and fasting. The Gilead team has already started the 2008 planning with a clearer vision to youth evangelism and leadership training.

Bibles and Literature

Printing is underway for 50,000 Bibles for Syria. We are very excited about the opportunities the Lord is providing for literature. We have sent several shipments of Bibles and books into Iraq and the staff there has reported they are almost running out of stock. This is great news. Also, the bookshop and cafe in Amman is doing very well compared to other bookshops in the country and is able to reach out with many titles to the entire region. A book team is now in Lebanon setting up a bookshop in Beirut.

Hope and Opportunity Amidst Adversity

Our Christian ministry partners have been working at the forefront of Christian outreach in the Middle East for over 30 years. They are uniquely positioned to impact communities throughout the region through emergency relief work, discipleship initiatives, and leadership training programs. Christians in the Crossfire

It is clear that Iraq today is not simply wracked by political conflicts; it is profoundly a religious battleground. The sectarian violence engulfing Iraq involves not only Sunnis and Shiites; it also pits Muslim insurgents against Christians. Iraqi Christians are often viewed as part of the “Christian occupying West”, and thus blamed for the current hardships and traumas. As a result, the marginalized Christian community in Iraq faces adversity and persecution.

Yet, despite these struggles, there is a growing number of churches in Iraq. Through our ministry partners working in Iraq, we seek to strengthen and encourage these frontier churches by providing them with essential training resources. Work Among Iraqi Refugees:

The number of Iraqi Christians living in Iraq has fallen from 1.4 million in the 1980’s to less than 500,000 today. The largest host countries of Iraqi refugees are Syria, Jordan, and Lebanon. Most of these refugees have lost all assets and property and live on the margins of society, both socially and economically, with few options for employment and limited access, if any, to medical services and education for their children. They have been traumatized, lost loved ones and seen their lives shaken to the core. They ache to see God’s face in the midst of their sufferings. Our ministry partners are supporting Christian schools that have opened their doors to Iraqi refugees. Your help is needed to keep these schools running.

Bibles for Syria

There is a shortage of Bibles in Syria. The difficulties between Syria and Lebanon have made Bibles less accessible in Syria. Syria has a growing church and a much higher percentage of Christians than many of the surrounding Arab countries except Lebanon. It also has a growing influx of refugees from Iraq.

There is also a growing interest in the Bible among the Kurds and other groups in Syria. Recent instability has stirred up an interest in the last days. 50,000 Bibles are needed at a cost of $5 each.
