Manara International
Middle Eastern Ministry Partner
Over 40 years ago, a believing couple became actively involved initiating Christian work in Jordan. Over the years, they have pioneered a number of significant ministries. Constituting Manara International, Manara meaning Lighthouse in Arabic, these different ministries continue to work towards the goal of spreading His glory throughout the Middle East.
Book Ministry
The 70's saw the birth of Manara Bookshop. This ministry initially served the Evangelical church community in Jordan. Its service has expanded immensely over the years. Today it has become The Good Book Shop in Amman and holds displays in secular book fairs and exhibitions using educational books along with scripture and Christian literature. There are also two other outlets, one in Baghdad and the other in Beirut. In addition to the book shops, the main work of the ministry is Bible and literature distribution. A goal of Manara Ministries was to deliver one million Bibles and New Testaments to Iraq, Syria, and the Arabian Peninsula by the year 2000. Only through the grace of God that goal has been accomplished. Over the past 25 years Manara Ministries has successfully distributed over 1.5 million Bibles, New Testaments, and other books to Iraq, Syria, and the Arabian Peninsula. In addition to these, children's material, other Christian books, videos, and cassettes have been distributed to build up the churches. Although it is difficult to estimate the impact these materials are having, we believe God is doing mighty things through this ministry. As the need for more literature increases, MM is being challenged to continually find the gaps and fill them appropriately. Our dream is to continue to plant outlets for literature provision in every place where the Lord opens up the opportunity. Ultimately, these outlets become centers in which the opportunities for Arab believers to grow in spiritual understanding and develop in their faith are limitless. Through these centers, Arabs will be able to read, study, write, teach one another and employ their literature talents to the glory of God and the enrichment of His Church.
Camp Ministry
Camp Gilead is located in the biblical site of Gilead near Amman. Manara receives hundreds of young people every year to the camp. In the early 70's, this faithful couple began camp ministry in Jordan. Thousands of children and young people have been through these camps and all have heard of the saving knowledge of Jesus Christ. In all the evangelical churches of Jordan today you meet young people who came to faith in Jesus through these camps. It has been the most significant tool of evangelism in Jordan. Also, the Camp Gilead Ministry has significantly prepared a whole generation of Christian leaders. The vast majority with leadership responsibility in the churches of Jordan today had their initial training and experience as counselors in the camps.
The Preschool Ministry
Two preschools were started several years ago as a ministry connected with community development. The preschools serve as learning, counseling, and evangelical centers in densely populated areas of Amman where there are large numbers of refugee families. The goal of this work is to minister to the spiritual needs of families through the education of their children. Many mothers and other relatives have come to faith through this ministry.
Micro-Enterprise Development
Through out the years, Manara International has been involved with organizing relief efforts. At times, these efforts have expanded into micro-economic development projects, such as embroidery projects. This work enables financially struggling urban and rural women from a Muslim background to earn money by producing traditional Jordanian embroidery. These products are then collected and marketed by Manara. This ministry combines personal empowerment with an introduction to the gospel and the love of Jesus Christ among the women.
